The Thai Christmas Fairy

The Thai Christmas Fairy. Uhh? Thailand is traditionally a Buddhist country, what’s this about a Thai Christmas fairy?
Well it’s true ‘jing’ (with a high tone) as they say in Thai.
Once upon a time, when nobody in Thailand had heard of Christmas, there lived a spirit (who often also visited friends from other religions in their beautiful spirit houses) who had a particular soft spot for lonely ‘farang’ (foreigner) children who longed to have a Christmas fairy of their own, but couldn’t because their Daddies were mainly rich and worked around the world, and from year to year they swapped countries (and houses and schools, and friends…).
One particularly beautiful and generous ’spirit’ was moved by their plight and decided to have a word with the god of gods – the god of all gods who had no particular connection with just any one religion. The god (who was also incredibly beautiful, generous and, un-godly -like, really super-friendly) immediately granted the spirits wish, to be come a Christmas Fairy. The god of gods (she was so generous, and wars never occurred in her sphere) also granted the Christmas Fairy an island all of her own.

And so it came to be that the Thai Christmas Fairy now lives in Ko Kradan (some times known as Go Krahdan) and many wondering Farang children in Thailand are blessed by her, as she sends them special gifts from her little golden-and-bamboo seat in the great big amazingly beautiful Thai Country world.
To this day, no one has ever really caught a glimpse of the Thai Christmas fairy. Some say that they have but her beauty just as soon simply disappears amidst a whirl of intricate golden embroidery, black long hair enveloped in sun in a warm ocean-blue fog.
Lots of children say they can feel her warmth though…..
